When you walk into a room full of people who already know each other, it is easy to feel invisible. This post uses one of the most vivid scenes in the Gospels, four friends lowering a paralyzed man through a roof in Mark 2:1-12, to explore what happens when faith refuses to treat an obstacle as a dead end. The core message is simple and striking: God has always been in the business of making a way where there is no way, and the miracle he gives is almost never the one anyone expected.

 

I stepped into the room and immediately felt out of place. Tables were strewn with Bibles and notebooks. Sweaters and backpacks draped over chairs. Small clusters of people buzzed with conversation. They knew each other. They had history. No one even knew my name. I felt unnecessary. 

 

Have you ever felt that way? Like the room was too full and too far along for you to matter? 

 

I stayed in my seat. But four men in Mark 2 didn’t.

 

They knew Jesus could heal their friend. If only they could get to him.

 

The God Who Makes A Way When There Isn't One

But the room was packed. People crowded around the door pushing and straining to get a closer look. His voice boomed through the windows. I don't know what he was preaching. But maybe he was quoting Isaiah 43.

 

I am the Lord, who opened a way through the waters,
    making a dry path through the sea…

…But forget all that—
it is nothing compared to what I am going to do.

For I am about to do something new.
See, I have already begun! Do you not see it?
I will make a pathway through the wilderness.
I will create rivers in the dry wasteland…

…I—yes, I alone—will blot out your sins for my own sake
and will never think of them again.

God has always been in the business of making a way where there was no way. He made a dry path through the sea and not even the mud clung to the feet of the Israelites. He brought water from a rock and a dew of manna. And for forty years of walking, their shoes never wore out!

 

When God works, there is nothing too difficult. 

 

What Faith Looks Like When The Room Is Crowded

This was another man’s house they were damaging with no guarantees. The men didn’t make excuses. They got to work. Shoveling, pulling, tying, lowering. As the dirt fell to the ground, they never even considered what it might cost them.

 

How many times do I make excuses for not doing the work God has called me to do? 

 

When I say it will cost too much. God says he owns the cattle on a thousand hills. People will judge me. God says, I’m the apple of his eye — it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. Jesus is too busy for me. God says his eye is on the sparrow, and I’m worth more than many sparrows. There’s not enough room. These four men made room. They tore a hole straight through the roof.

 

These men looked at the roof and didn’t see an obstacle. They saw an opportunity. And when Jesus looked at the men, he saw their faith. The sweat, dirt, the blisters on their hands testified about what they believed.

 

Faith isn’t a concrete concept. It’s an internal decision with outward results. 

 

The Miracle No One Expected

And the result for this man was something he never expected. The faith of the four men was evident, but what about the man on the mat? Jesus never even looked at his legs. His first words weren’t about his handicap. They were about his heart. “Your sins are forgiven.” The men brought him there for physical healing, but he left with forgiveness. That wasn’t the miracle they were expecting. But that’s the thing about trusting God. He does more than we expect. Every. Single. Time.
