Have you ever felt stuck in a battle you just can’t seem to win? You’re not alone.
Paul puts it perfectly:
“I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it! Instead, I do what I hate.” —Romans 7:14 (NLT)
Even after four decades of following Christ, I still find myself echoing his words:
“Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life dominated by sin and death?” —Romans 7:24
The Battle Within
Paul didn’t write from a safe distance—he wrote from deep within the struggle. He knew shame. He knew regret. That’s why his words still cut to the core.
Each of us fights our own war against sin. In my life, God is always revealing areas that need confession and change. His holiness exposes what still lingers in the corners of my heart. And still, my nature resists. I often, willingly, walk the path of disobedience.
When Sin Becomes a Master
Paul uses the imagery of bondage to describe sin’s grip on us. It takes control—of our thoughts, our habits, our lives.
“How can I know all the sins lurking in my heart? Cleanse me from these hidden faults. Keep your servant from deliberate sins! Don’t let them control me.” —Psalm 19:12–13
A life ruled by sin cannot please God. So, is there any hope?
The Only Way Out
Yes—Jesus Christ is the answer.
“Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord.” —Romans 7:25
We can’t break free from sin on our own. But when we trust in Jesus, His Spirit fills us and frees us. We no longer live under sin’s control—we live empowered to please God.
A New Identity
The Hebrew word for Redeemer reminds us: God rescues His people from slavery and gives them His name. Paul writes:
“You have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children… and since we are his children, we are his heirs.” —Romans 8:15, 17
As we study God’s Word, we start to reflect the image of our Father. Sin no longer defines us—His Spirit does.
The War Isn’t Over… Yet
Yes, we still struggle. We still fall. But we are not without hope.
Until the day we receive our glorified bodies in heaven, let the Spirit of God search your heart. Surrender daily. And trust—the victory is already on the horizon.
